I am enjoying this series and would highly recommend this book and the two preceding it. The one star I gave is because of a defect in the copy I received. I ordered the mass market paperback version and read it with no problems until page 604. From that point until page 634, the pages are out of order. I will include pictures to illustrate what I mean. I have not read any further, so I'm not sure if the problem repeats later on in the book.DON'T BUY THE PAPERBACK!!

Fortune Favorites Colleen McCullough 9780380710836 Books Reviews
There are 4 pages missing. It jumps from page 604 to 609.
This is an excellent book telling the tale of a Rome I knew nothing about. It is totally different from the hollywood versions of Rome.
Collen McCuough has spun a dramatic tale full of complex people. Set in a time when Rome was still a republic. I enjoyed every page and as with every good book I have read, I was sorry when I was done.
This is one of a series of books dramatizing Ancient Roman History.
I initially read them mostly in the paper back version, and have now purchased the entire range of first edition hardcovers to read again and for convenience on the kindle.
Highly recommended!
This book is fascinating historical fiction. I love the detail and the series as a whole makes me want to keep reading
No one tells the history of Rome and Julius Caesar like Colleen McCullough. Even Caesar's campaigns in Gaul were interestingly portrayed for a 70 year old reader. That is simply amazing and attests to the skill of the writer. All the books in the series are well worth reading, as is her Song of Troy. A great mind writing.
Fortune's Favorites follows some of the great Roman personalities on their respective rises to greatness Ceasar, Pompey and Crassus, the members of the First Triumvirate (as history calls them). Unfortunately I took a long break in the middle of this book because other reading came up but it stands just as consistent and well-researched as the rest of the First Man in Rome series has been. McCullough gives a great telling of Spartacus and the ineptitude of numerous consuls as well as continuing to develop Caesar as the fully-rounded man he was. Just buy the books, keep reading them, and even for well-educated students of Classics, McCullough always has something more to offer. Beautifully done.
Fortune's Favorites is the fifth book I have read in McCullough's series on ancient Rome. I have not read the books in order which in no way has interfered with my enjoyment of them!
It would be fun to see Colleen match her knowledge of ancient
Rome against a faculty of classical studies. I would imagine the Australian lady would do quite well!
Her research is well done as she unfolds for the reader the last years of the Roman Republic in the first century before Christ.
I found this volume in the series to be one of the best!
She describes in great detail the dictatorship of Sulla; the rise to fame of Julius Caesar as well as the usual political intrigue, romance and violence which were endemic in Roman
culture.McCullough books have more people in them than are in the typical telephone book! her prose is mostly pedestrian and
undistinguished but there are rewards for the patient reader!
These books are complexly plotted but what they tell us about Rome will stick in the mind of the reader for a long time to
come.
I have been hooked by them and would recommend them to a person
eager to spend the time and energy to wade through them.
