To be honest, I probably wouldn't have given the book a second glance if I hadn't heard of the author for other reasons, and I am glad that I did. There are numerous flaws; the book tosses you right into the middle of its world without any breathing room. I understand that exposition dumps are not in vogue right now, and I'm not asking for the story to freeze so the author can explain everything, but having statements that were clearly meant to be important but were completely lost on me over and over again got frustrating. The characters ranged from typical young adult fluff to interesting enough to hold one's attention. There was only one that frequently frustrated me, and that, unfortunately, happened to be the protagonist. She frequently makes decisions that blow up in her face, which wouldn't be entirely bad if the book didn't seem to be trying to portray her as having above-average intelligence. That aside, I was invested in the book. I wanted to see where everything was going, and how it would all end. I'll probably read the sequel, which is by itself something of an endorsement.Product details

Hatred Day Hatred Day Series Book 1 eBook TS Pettibone Reviews
An excellent novel!! Well written, rich in imagination and a lovely read. Can't wait for the second installment to be published! Good work!
Exciting! Good characters! A bit convoluted though (Spells, amnesia, alien races, beasts, weird names.) Need notecards to tell Lucian from Lycinius after a while. Is Verdict Day ever coming out?
I loved this book! The way it was written paints a vivid picture in my head of the characters and the world they live in. I was sucked into the story from the beginning and am eagerly awaiting the release of Verdict Day!
Really enjoyed the step up in the ya genre. It was so refreshing to see a truthful story, so tired of unrealistic female characters. I wonder if snofrid would have benefited from reading "what makes us girls"? It is clear that she is kind heart and emotionally driven and seeing how the down side of those character traits do tend to blow up. Also enjoyed the team work of playing to each character's best abilities.
As someone who was born cross eyed with lazy eye affecting both eyes, I really got a kick out if Rhode's jokes.
Now, my advertised the next installment being released on 2017, but I'll go find the website to see all that you two have put out about this incredible analogy world.
Thanks again ladies, can't wait to share this one with my daughter as well.
I had read warm positive comments on Vox Day's blog (and watched one of the Pettibone sisters interview Vox Day); so, I came to and read the first chapter. Immediately ordered the book. Ended up blowing off work for the day and reading voraciously to the end! Amazed if this is a first book -- WOW! These two are talented! I'm a technical editor by profession, and expected ... less than well-done. Marvelously, brilliantly done, almost no typos or wrong word choices, plot coherent all the way through, evocative wordings, -- essentially the WRITING receded from consciousness (always a huge problem for an editor the editorial eye never sleeps!) and only the plot and characters held my attention.
I'm also sad though I read headlong onto the last page.... and the second volume isn't published yet. Hurry, girls, hurry!
"Hatred Day" is an artful blend of dystopian sci-fi and magic and it's packed with cool ideas. The authors (authoresses?) have managed to write a feminine character that isn't unbearable to read. The heroine is traditional instead of deviant and competent without being the tiresome, unrealistic Mary Sue who can beat up every guy in the world. She's also suffered a great deal but hasn't become dysfunctional. (Other writers take note.)
There's lots of plot spoilers in these reviews already, so let me offer something different. From the point of view of a person who hopes to be published some day, this work is nothing short of inspiring. The prose is tight and compelling, the descriptions paint a vivid picture without being too ornate and the backstory and exposition is handled really well. There's lots of creativity here, and the promise of a lot more to come. The Pettibone sisters may well create the next Hunger Games-level franchise.
The first time you read a book it's driven by anticipation. If it's worth another read as Hatred Day clearly is, you really hear the story.
Hatred Day will go deep. In a recent interview with coauthor Brittany, she said eight books was the plan. Eight! This definitely took it out of the predictable and now common dystopian trilogy category.
I definitely think this is worth the read if you love dystopian novels as much as I do. The world is multilayered, the characters are boldly described. There is a hint of romance without detracting from strength of characters. Women are strong but feminine and there are charming memories that unfold.
Can't wait for the next installment!
