The Wild Rose of Kilgannon Kathleen Givens 9780440235682 Books

Just finished reading "Kilgannon" and now "Wild Rose.." - great stories!

I agree with alot of the reviews - the typos were highly irritating, and I think Amazon should sell this for a discount, what with all the errors. If I'd bought the hardcopy, I would have been tempted to return it to the bookstore for a refund, just based on all the errors.

However,I was enthralled with the story and plugged away, despite the typos. I agree that Mary is a bit whiny- I like my female characters to be strong, and sometimes she seemed anything but. And I was a little put off by how many times Mary was convinced that she just wasn't beautiful enough to be attractive to someone like Alex. (At times, in the first book, I wondered if Alex would come to regret marrying her - she was SO needy.) But their courtship was a hoot, and the dialogue was really pretty funny, especially when Mary was forced to tolerate the insipid and shallow comments of her contempories in London society.

Once they moved to Kilgannon, I was just carried away by the story, and couldn't put it down. Givens does a nice job creating the atmosphere of Loch Gannon and of the clan. I could almost hear the bagpipes when they "piped" someone home.

Alex's time in prison- I was on pins and needles. At times, I caught myself gasping - I felt like an idiot, but that's how engrossing the story becomes. A few things were a bit of a stretch - like when Mary visits Alex in prison for the first time and the guards leave them alone in a room, and Alex shoves a table against the door and they drop to the floor and well,...do what romance novel characters do. I thought, come on! He's charged with treason and most likely facing a horrible death, and this is what happens?? oh, well.

Either way, I recommend it as great entertainment, especially if you like historical romances set in Scotland. Interesting perspective on the Scottish rebellion from the point of view of a non-Jacobite, and an interesting look at the "justice" system of 18th century England, as it were.

The Wild Rose of Kilgannon Kathleen Givens 9780440235682 Books Reviews

This is the final installment of Mary and Alex's love story which started in "Kilgannon." This series is a must for any fan of Historical Romance with strong female characters. Kathleen Givens writing will have you reading up late into the night. Your heart will soar and break with each page. The Highlands of Scotland are portrayed beautifully in all its glorious heather.
I just finished this book and I cannot believe how much I enjoyed it! I love this series and I do hope that Kathleen Givens comes out w/ more to this or a different story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am in love with Alex and Mary. This was a great love story, great action, great everything! Please take my advice and read her two books! This one fabulously picks up where the other left off! Way to go Kathleen!
All of Kathleen Givens books are truly wonderful. She brings you there with her on her journey. This is the first book I read that brought me to Scotland (if only in my mind). I love her style of writing, and the characters she shows you. During and after reading these, you can really imagine the strife of the people of Scotland. It is historically intriguing. These books led me to read Diane Galbaldon's Outlander Series. Some day I will get to Scotland because of these books. So beware, you might want to go there as well, after reading these.
Kathleen Givens writes an obviously well researched historical novel. This book is a sequel to her earlier work Kilgannon. She has a nack for conveying the turmoil of 18th century Scotland and the agonizing choices people had to make. Her characters and their dialogue are believable and her descriptions of the landscape convey its beauty. The love story is beautiful but fraught with sadness. This may have been realistic considering the times, but was disturbing. My other dissapointment in this book was that the ending was rather inconclusive. Perhaps she is planning another sequel.
Very happy with pace of the story, vivid picture of how society was so structured by class, power, dictates of fashion and social interactions, and the story showed how ignorance of a person's culture (Scottish) could be so misrepresented by the English who saw themselves set apart, and high and mighty, and he Scots as savages. Very disappointed there won't be a followup to this series because the author has passed away. She captured me in each of the two books from the very beginning and the I was caught up in the love story within.
I was not happy with the first novel, Kilgannon, and I was only reading this sequel to satisfy my curiosity about the rest of the story. The writing style improves with this second book, and the story along with it. I'm glad I persevered and read this. There are still elements that I found implausible at times, and I didn't really like the main character Mary, but this second installment was a definite improvement on the first and I'm happy to recommend it for anyone wanting a highland tale filled with history.
God I love how this woman writes. I have two tests for a 5 star romance (1) can I put it down? and (2) will I read it again? This book passes both tests. Could not put it down and I will read it again. For those considering buying it, make sure you also buy Kilgannon. The two books are the two parts to the same story--and you will want both. I just get lost in her tales and her characters. I loved Mary...what a heroine! She is independent and smart and does what she thinks is right. And I loved her man, Alex, the Lord Kilgannon. He is all Scot, all man, very romantic, loves his woman fiercely, can fight with the best of them and leads men well and keeps his humor no matter the peril. I suggest you read these two books after On Highland Shore and Rivals for the Crown. They involved the same family/clan but hundreds of years earlier (13th century). It helped having the earlier story to understand the clan Kilgannon came from though it is not essential to enjoying this one based in the 1700s. I have all of Kathleen Givens' works. She is simply the best...a standard for all others.
