The first 2 books in this trilogy take place between 1962 and 1965. This third book jumps forward about 20 years to the mid 90s. While the characters from the first books play a major role in this book, the next generation, their children, are the main characters.Ophelie is now a teacher, a successful playwright, but lonely.
Ceb is a homeless man, seemingly without family, friends or hope.
Eric and Rislene seem to have a love without hope for a future.
Set against the backdrop of military conflict and social upheaval, the author weaves an incredible tale of God's faithfulness, His love and His infinite mercy toward His children. The Algerian conflict continues, with cries of Jihad becoming louder and louder. Rislene's Muslim family will do almost anything to keep her from Christian influences. Eric thinks his love is strong enough to hold her, but is it?
Ceb had it all. In an instant of poor judgement, everything was ripped from him. Is there any punishment he can put himself through that will atone for all the tragedy? Then Ophelie shows up, a reminder of all that was good and right about his previous life. Does God's forgiveness extend to cover even Ceb's sins? Will he always have blood on his hands? Does love, indeed, cover a multitude of sins and allow Ceb to have a normal life again?
Very well written. The author does an amazing job with character development. I feel a kinship with Gabbie and David, Ophelie, Ceb, Eric, and all the others who populate these books. Hint: you do need to read them in order to get the whole story.

Two Destinies A Novel Secrets of the Cross Trilogy Elizabeth Musser 9780781405010 Books Reviews
As with all of Elizabeth Musser's books, the story deftly wraps around central characters and the history of the time period while faith is woven into daily lives. I found the history in these especially meaningful as I had forgotten a lot of the happenings between these two countries and these books bring the history to life. I love these books!
Excellent end to this trilogy. The stories weaving through all 3 novels are of families torn by war & cultural conflict. The history in these books is fascinating, & the characters compelling. The conflict between Muslim & Christian religion is so current; scary & sad; fearful for the future. In the end, the message of the love & salvation of the Lord Jesus is strong. Great series.
In my small, secure world, following Christ has never been a risk for me, my family, or in my life. To read of such strong faith and the risks faced by so many has opened my eyes to a world outside my own. I can only pray I could stand so strong for my beliefs in such an oppressive world.
After reading the first two books in this series, Two Destinies was a let-down. It is still a good read, and I enjoyed hearing about the characters in the previous books. However, I thought this book was a little long and parts seemed forced. For example, as the reader, I thought Musser really forced the homeless storyline.
This series is excellent. I had to get all 3 books. Each book can be read on its own without having read the others in the series. Of course it is better when read all together as it just gives more depth to each character and the issues discussed in the books. The book has suspense, torn loyalties between family members because of religion, wonders of how impossible situations will be resolved. It ends with reconciliation of old friends and hope for a better tomorrow. I loved these books and wouldn't be able to tell you which was my favorite. They are all different with similar themes and SPOILER the good guys win in the end.
A really good read! I have to say that it was a little slow going at first but that is mostly due to the fact that there are several different story lines going on and ground work getting established in what is to come. However, around chapter 11 things start converging and you will find it near to impossible to put the book down.
You will be held in suspense wondering how things will work out not only for Rislene and Eric but for several others in the novel. There is so much good spiritual food to feast and think upon in this book I won't even begin to try to cover it all. But I believe that Musser beautifully portrayed the issues dealing with the homeless and of those Christians living in Algeria and even in France at this time. The issues of women living in a Muslim culture and of those that become Christians, with all they face are brought to light in this well written and thoughtful novel.
It is not a light read but it is a worth while read. I come away from this novel, happy to have read it, feeling as if I have learned something and encouraged... Encouraged to let my life and light shine! Bravo, Musser!
4 1/2 Stars
I loved how this trilogy was written. I read all three books in a short period of time because I could not put them down! I appreciated that it was written around the actual history of the French and Algerian war. I learned a lot! As a Christian, I enjoyed reading about God, Christianity and challenges people faced during that time. The author stuck to her Christians roots. It was nice reading something clean, yet smart and exciting.
