I'm glad I got this series on sale. I had heard good things about it, but it wasn't my cup of tea. There were enough plot lines crammed into these six books for about sixteen more stories and the over the top, unrealistic, and confusing drama took away from the characters connections. The emotional maturity was very lacking and for a romance series, where that is kind of the point of the story, it makes it difficult to read. A good example is the entire book Uncaged. What was the point of this story? It doesn't advance any plots, show any character growth or contribute to the next story, it's just there for drama. So many little things to drive a person nuts too....an example that isn't a spoiler is Asher calling Cooper "Coop" even as a kid. Why would a big brother call his younger brother by their shared last name? That just makes no sense what so ever.
The last story, Locke, is the one that really brought the entire rating down though. The characters are both seen in all the previous stories, so by the time we get to them we feel like we kind of know them. Emmy is shy but sweet, Locke is quiet and sad but emotionally intelligent enough to orchestrate all of the other love stories from behind the scenes, often saying just the thing to bring the others together. Then in their book, Emmy is a stripper and not shy and Locke had not a lick of emotional intelligence in his body? What?!? But the real deal breaker for me was the cavalier way rape was used as a plot device with no repercussions. For Emmy to not need therapy (intense therapy), never have any kind of nightmare or flashback, or suffer from any hesitancy during their rather adventurous sex life is beyond unrealistic and irresponsible by the author. There was so much that could have been responsibly explored here that would have allowed the author to show the characters bonding emotionally, but instead she just keeps throwing more and more drama at them. And why on earth would Emmy have gotten out of that horrifying situation at 21 and gotten her life together only to go back in this book to be raped again? And once she's back and it happens, why does she stay?!? I wish this had been explained in the book, because I was completely baffled. But to then leave, leaving this cruel rapist without any repercussions to continue raping the other dancers? No police report? No beat down? Not even a talking to? Nothing? What self-centered jerks to never even give those other women a thought. Unbelievable.
I really wanted to like this series, but I just couldn't get into it. For me, romance requires me to be able to relate to the characters, and none of these characters were relatable. How am I supposed to put myself in the shoes of Emmy? I would love to see this author learn and grow to where she is able to show instead of tell her stories, and to dig into the relationships instead of the drama. Romance novels are about deep connections between two people and I never got this from these books. I kept hoping the next one would be better, show some growth, but if anything they got worse as the series went on.

I don't even know where to begin with this series. Harper Sloan knocked it out of the park again and again!

This series follows a group of men who served together in the Marine Corps and then formed a security company together after they were discharged. Each individual has their own struggles and watching them work through their problems while also falling in love is basically an honor.

In Axel we see the aftermath of domestic violence at its worse. Harper Sloan does not shy away from the hard topics. As a domestic violence survivor myself I appreciate her brutal honesty. She obviously did her research on the psychological effects domestic violence victims deal with for the rest of their lives.

In Cage we see an alpha at his finest. Cage wasn't opposed to love as seems to be theme with most men in romance these days. He jumped head first. And when it was threatened he took that threat out with deadly force. I also enjoyed the tie in with another series (but I don't want to spoil anything).

In Uncaged we get a deeper look in to Cage's happily ever after, which isn't always so happy. And we get to spend more time with Cohen. Sweet, adorable, delightful Cohen. Harper absolutely nails all that is delightful in little boys and what unconquerably faith in life looks like.

In Beck you get gutted. And I mean gutted. I have 4 words for you Mason jar and glitter. I was not prepared for the ugly cry this book brought on. But Ms. Sloan handled it with class, dignity, and gave us one of the most subtle and moving tributes I have ever read to date. I also appreciated her diving into the topic of emotional ptsd. Sometimes there isn't always a clear reason why people hide themselves from even their closest friends. Sometimes it isn't an obvious trauma. If writing hadn't worked out for her Harper Sloan could definitely have become a therapist LOL

In Cooper we see life reborn. Time heals wounds. They are not forgotten but life can be rebuilt. This one is hard for me to write about without providing spoilers but trust me when I saw this is the comfort you were wanting after reading Beck.

Locke! Oh Maddox Locke! I was so anxious for Maddox's book. Even after only reading Axel. Maddox was such a dichotomy. He always had great advice and inspired hope in those around while at the same time denying himself any happiness. Harper Sloan definitely threw some curve balls in there. Again I don't wanna spoil anything but Maddox is hiding more than emotional scars. We'll leave it at that. Oh and let's just say this book convinced me that piercings are delightful! Emmy really came into her own through the series and after reading more about her past in this book it was awesome to watch her go after what she wanted. And go after it she did. Poor Maddox never stood a chance!

This is an amazing series. Definitely something to keep on the kindle for re-reading when you're in a funk or have a book hangover. I honestly cannot say enough good things. You will not regret this one-click!
