Ritual Mo Hayder 9780593056424 Books

This is the 3rd book I've read by Mo Hayder, and it is very good—although not quite as riveting as the first two. This book brings in African bad medicine and practicers of ancient rituals, as well as a new character named Flea, whose job consists of diving for dead bodies. She teams up with Jack Caffery to solve the crime—she has found a chopped off human hand which leads them on a twisted path to the killers.

The African rituals were appropriately scary and creepy, but the victims were a bit less sympathetic in this book. I did enjoy the teaming of Flea and Jack, and hope that the future books in the series include her.

Book was suspenseful with some nice twists, and again I'd recommend to any fans of this genre.

Ritual Mo Hayder 9780593056424 Books Reviews

All her books are terrific and this one is no exception. Mo Hayer is addictive. Try to read the Caffery
books in order so you follow the thread. Although it isn't necessary to do so, it does enhance the
unique experience of reading Mo's page turners. And she does a huge amount of research for her
books as well.
I must say, another slamming good book from Mo Hayder! Her thrillers are always interesting, intense and intelligent! Buy this book!
This is the third book of the Jack Caffery series that I've read and each one is better than the one before. Superb storylines with depth, riddles to solve and always the thrill of discovery at the end.
This is another great book in this series. It was good to finally meet the mysterious Walking Man, too. I understand he shows up in the series once in a while.

The story line is gruesome and a bit scary. Flea is involved as the head diver in the police force. She seems to run on adrenaline and instinct. The interaction between her and Caffery is starting to get interesting in this novel. I highly recommend this book.
I had read the first two Hayder/Caffery novels – but this really wasn't advertised as a "Jack Caffery 3" novel. The second novel in the Caffery series, as far as I know, was published in 2002 and this, the "third" published in 2008. And, oh, but how things have changed! As dark as the first two, this installment is much, much darker. It's as if Hayder's style is much darker – eerie even – as the plot. You really hope to find something good about Jack – you want to like him, want to find something noble in him but that just doesn't seem to be in him. While the secon book in the series dealt with some horrible things, this novel is so much more chilling because you find that there is no redemption. And that is part of what is terrifying in this book.
This is a very creepy suspense novel with horribly damaged main characters Caffery is still haunted by the disappearance of his brother Ewan when they were both children--he is convinced to a moral certainty that Ewan was taken and killed by a pederast who lived nearby while Flea/Phoebe, a police diver, hasn't come to terms with the death of her parents while on a technical dive in Africa. It is not surprising that both characters feel there are people (or something) just out of reach that they can't quite see or hear but who are there nonetheless.

The story begins when Phoebe finds a pair of recently severed human hands in a shallow lake while on a dive looking for evidence of an unrelated crime. Much hangs on this discovery and on Phoebe's ability as a diver--Hayder brings this home with excellent descriptions of search patterns, equipment and, most importantly, how it feels to be blind underwater while seeking to find something in the murk and mud on the bottom.

Neither Caffery nor Flea are likeable--one (at least this one) would not want them as regular companions. But compared to the criminals, suspects, witnesses and others they are exemplary individuals. Three key characters, only one of whom is a definite bad guy, torture others. One did it for retribution--he slowly cut up a child murderer, keeping him alive for as long as possible to force him to feel everything, including the nails used crucify him. Another videotaped the degradation and torment of young men (who may or may not have been witting volunteers) as part of a social science experiment. The third eviscerated homeless drug addicts--those who wouldn't be missed--while recording their screams of agony since his customers would pay more the body parts or blood if he could prove they were taken from living people who really felt the pain.

"Ritual" may seem like a blood drenched creep-fest with a high butcher's bill--which it is--but Hayder keeps things hurtling along and the reader is hooked if horrified. I haven't read the other Jack Caffery novels but based on "Ritual" and the sublime "The Devil of Nanking" I will be getting them soon.
Really good story, but a little gut-churning as these stories are. Definitely not a serious for anyone sensitive to certain subjects. Enthralling, and I certainly didn't pick the killer. It's also left a bit of a mystery.
The only thing that confused me a bit was the author discussing the hero in "The Problem with Caffery". She states he's a 'woman-beating alcoholic'. I didn't see this in the previous books I've read. Yes, he drinks, but I wouldn't class him as an alcoholic, and I certainly didn't read anywhere that he was a woman-beater nor read any scenes where he beat up a woman. Maybe it's a British slang term for something else? Not sure. But interesting how sometimes the author's POV is so different to reader's.
Nevertheless, I will be reading more of this series, and recommend it for anyone who likes hard-subject thrillers.
