The movie Big Fish is one of my favourites, but this is a situation, much like Forrest Gump, where the novelist creates an unforgettable character and the screenwriter takes that character and creates a wonderful plot that's not in the novel. The two are best when considered together. Reading the book helps you appreciate the complexity of the main character. Watching the movie puts that complex character into interesting situations and makes him do things the novelist didn't know he could do. I hope that makes sense.

This is one of those stories you can't help but share. You read it over and over, and then you read it to your children until they read it over and over for themselves. Everyone says they want to live the fairytale. This is the story that teaches you how.
Fathers, or the relationship with fathers, are the topic of Big Fish.

This is a 3-star book with 5-star writing. You can read this book in a single setting. If your experience is like mine, you return to the book to re-read a section or find a paragraph. Walk away, and the "away" time allows the book to filter or percolate. You'll return and re-read a chapter and experience both the chapter and the book in a different way.

The father of a friend of mine passed away in the last months of 2012. During the summer, my friend interviewed his dad and recorded his oral history. My friend told me the stories contained in the oral history and kept saying, "I didn't know that. I never knew."

My friend's comments over lunch were more poignant than the book. The lunch setting and the stories and jokes were superior to Big Fish.

Nevertheless, Big Fish has a big lesson for men and boys and has excellent writing.
If you have seen the Tim Burton film, this is a little different but understandable. The book the way it was written would not transfer to the film. The story is still excellent and well worth reading. I actually wish that I had read the book first, then saw the film.
I had seen the movie years ago. I didn't realize it was a book tiil I saw it in the kindle store. Love love love the movie so gave the book a try. Its very good. Edward reminds me so much of my brother, always ready with a joke and a great storyteller.
Highly recommend this tale. Its sweet and funny and sad. Made me realize how many lives we all touch whether we know it or not, so maybe we should strive to be the best we can. And learn a joke!
If you saw and loved the movie first you may be disappointed by this book. I know I was at first. But if you look at them separately I think you can still enjoy it. It is a really touching look at the relationship between a father and son. How well do we really know our parents? Can we accept them as they are before they are gone? I think in that way the book really succeeded.
I'm a sucker for the supernatural done well -- by which I mean an accommodation between the supernatural and the dominant realist tradition. Henry James finds one way to do it in The Turn of the Screw, James Joyce another in Ulysses, Thomas Pynchon yet another in Against the Day. Wallace has found his own way -- a mix of Twain and perhaps Faulkner. The novel concerns the relations between an extraordinary father and his son, Edward and William Bloom. The novel's present concern is the father's dying and eventual death. That gives the novel its narrative spine. However, most of the novel spends its time in a comic past. Corn and theatrical sentimentality have no place here. The book proceeds largely by outrageous and snappy anecdote. Wallace's prose, like Twain's, performs little miracles without losing its colloquial qualities. Indeed, a good deal of the book's success with the mythological comes from the matter-of-fact tone. Yet Wallace trivializes nothing. There is still a sense of the amazing in all of it. Edward has performed his own small-town labors of Hercules, which establish him in his son's mind as a classical hero. A fine father is usually looked on by his children not as perfect, but as a hero. Edward has flaws -- mainly wanderlust -- which keep him from his family for weeks, if not months at a time. So he is (as his surname implies) also Odysseus, and his wife a Penelope who waits.

The book also contains a lot of ancient jokes and wheezes, and you've probably heard them all before, but it doesn't matter. The telling is so lively, you will likely enjoy them anyway. The ending took my breath away. It may be yet another tall tale, but who knows? It's also set up throughout the book, but I'll bet dollars to doughnuts you won't catch Wallace as he false shuffles and deals seconds or even fifths. He's a pleasure to read and in my opinion one of the best American novelists around.

NOTE I first saw Tim Burton's movie (for me, his best) and it rook me until now to read the book. The movie and the book are two different things, each superb in its own way. The movie, if you've seen it, will not prepare you for the book.
OK, I loved this! It was like being read a bedtime story but I'm an adult and no one does that for me! lol So, I read it myself and it was so fun! It's a great fairy tail! It has it's sad moments and there are some lessons to be learned but it is just pure fun and imagination. I haven't seen the movie in a very long time but I think it differs quite a bit from what I remember.

So, I think you need to set aside your movie expectations and read this one without comparison. Don't go with the cliche and over used, "the book is always better than the movie" or the "I am a huge Tim Burton fan"! Set the movie aside and read this for what it is ... a magical fairy tail!
